Barney’s Records
Raymond ‚Ray‘ Barney hatte den elterlichen Plattenladen ‚Barney’s Record Shop‘ übernommen, der sich zu einem sehr wichtigen Vertrieb für Chicago House Music entwickelte.
Ray, der eigentlich eher aus dem R&B-Bereich kam, erkannte die aufkommende neue House-Musik und gründete die Labels Dance Mania (für rauhere Tracks) und Bright Star Records (für Songs).
Auf vielen Platten der verschiedensten Labels findet sich unten der Hinweis:
„Distributed by Barney Record Distribution.“

Vorgeschichte (DM 000)
Die Diskografie beginnt mit der Nummer DM 000, dem Song „What’s That“ von The Browns. Einem Projekt von dem Team der Jesse’s Gang, geschrieben von Duane Buford.
Das Logo hierfür wurde von Vince Lawrence entworfen, der auch schon das Jes Say Records Logo kreiert hatte.
Als Ray Barney 1986 sein eigenes House-Label gründen wollte, schlug Duane kurzerhand den Namen „Dancemania“ vor und bot Ray das gerade gegründete Label an. (Außerdem übergab ihm Jesse Saunders 1986 das Label Jes-Say, da er nach Los Angeles zog.)
Die erste Veröffentlichung war „Hardcore Jazz“ (DM 001) von Duane & Co, hinter dem Duane Buford stand.

Dank seines Club Hits „French Kiss“ von 1989, wechselte Lil Louis zu den Major Labels.

Auf Dance Mania hat Victor Romeo (=Victor Parris Mitchell) mehrere Maxis mit verschiedenen Partnern veröffentlicht.
Zuvor erschien bei Bright Star Records der Song „You can’t Fight my Love“. (BR 004)
Interessant bei den beiden Maxis aus der Anfangszeit sind auch die B-Seiten mit den Acid Songs „The Art of Acid“ und „Acid Rain“.
