Hot Mix 5 – The First 20 Maxis ’87-89
Die Hot Mix 5 sind ein legendäres DJ-Team aus den USA. Drei seiner Mitglieder gründeten 1986 das gleichnamige Label, auf dem zahlreiche Klassiker entstanden. Hier sind die ersten 20 Veröffentlichungen aufgelistet.
Die Entstehung des Hot Mix 5 DJ Teams
Die „Hot Mix 5“ war ein DJ-Team aus Chicago, Illinois, gegründet 1981 von Lee Michaels, dem Programmdirektor des Radiosenders WBMX.
Die Chicagoer House-Musikszene erlebte einen explosionsartigen Aufschwung, als die Sendung der Hot Mix 5 zur Nummer-1-Radiosendung in Chicago avancierte und den neuen „House“ Sound verbreitete.
Im Laufe der Jahre hat sich die Zusammensetzung des Teams noch etwas geändert. Scott Silz wurde zunächst 1984 durch Julian „Jumpin“ Perez ersetzt, 1985 übernahm Mario „Smokin’“ Diaz.
Hinzugekommen ist Frankie „Hollywood“ Rodriguez.

1986 starteten die drei Mitglieder Mickey Oliver, Kenny Jason und Ralphi Rosario das House Label Hot Mix 5.

Die erste Veröffentlichung auf Hot Mix 5 erschien im Januar 1987 (HMF 001). Der Song „My House Is Bigger…“ basiert auf der Bassline von El Coco’s „Cocomotion“ von 1979. Der Song „Electric House“ spielt mit Samples des ‚Twilight Zone‘ Themes von 1959.

Ralphi Rosario
Ralphi Rosario hat drei Releases unter seinem Namen, nutzte aber auch Aliase: Revoked, Hex Complexx , Raz, Tagé bzw. war an diesen Gruppen beteiligt: Ramos, Smokin‘ Gang.
Einer der stärksten Songs aus der Anfangszeit von Hot Mix 5 ist „You Used to Hold Me“ mit der starken Stimme von Cynthia Ann Baker aka Xavier Gold.
Der nachfolgende Song „In the Night“ ist auch ein Klassiker.

The Jackin‘ National Anthem / Housebroken

Ramos ist ein Projekt von Mickey Oliver und The Dragon Child aka Cheese (Jim Romano) und dieser Song ist der Einzige von Ramos.
Der Songtitel ist vermutlich inspiriert von Marshall Jeffersons „The House Music Anthem“, wie der Song „Move your Body“ auf Trax Records hieß.
Der Song wurde auch verwendet in dem Film „Red Heat“ mit Arnold Schwarzenegger und Jim Belushi von 1988. (siehe IMDb)

Mickey als Mitgründer von Hot Mix 5 hat vier Maxis unter eigenem Namen veröffentlicht und ist beteiligt an vielen Releases.
Mitstreiter auf seine 12″ sind The Dragon Child (wie bei Ramos), Tagé (= Ralphi Rosario), Shanna Jae aka Paris Grey, Johnny „Wild Boy B“ (=Johnny Burnell) und M.C. Taste.
Der Titel „Rhythm of the Beat“ von Tony Sineni (HMF 005) ist vielleicht nur ein Alias von Mickey?

Mario Diaz ist 1985 zu dem DJ Team Hot Mix 5 hinzugekommen (deshalb nicht auf dem obigen Bild zu sehen) und löste Julian „Jumpin“ Perez ab. Er hatte einige 12″ unter seinem Namen, war aber auch Teil von der Latin House Crew, Gründer der Smokin‘ Gang und remixte einige Songs (z.B. den Acid Dream Mix von „Dream Girl“ ).

Candice Jordan aka Candy J oder auch Sweet Pussy Pauline hat zwei Maxis auf Hot Mix 5 Records veröffentlicht. Sie war aber auch als Songschreiberin und Texterin bei „Don’t Want It“ von Kenny Jason beteiligt.
Der Song „Somethings They Never Change“ wurde von Candy J und Adonis geschrieben und produziert. Für mich ein Highlight auf diesem Label. Die zweite Maxi „Desirable Revenge“ erschien mit Sticker der auf die explizite Inhalte hinweist.
