Die T-Coy Band
T-Coy war ein frühes House-Musikprojekt aus Manchester, das in den späten 1980er-Jahren aktiv war. Der Name „T-Coy“ steht angeblich für „Take Care Of Yourself“.
Die Gruppe bestand aus Mike Pickering (bekannt als DJ in der Hacienda, Mitglied von Quando Quango und später M-People), Simon Topping (ehemals A Certain Ratio) und Richie Close, einem vielseitigen Musiker und Arrangeur.

Maxi Übersicht
Cariño / Regret
Die erste Single „Cariño“ (spanisch für „Liebling“) wurde sogleich ein Klassiker, ein instrumental geprägtes Stück, das lateinamerikanische Rhythmen mit House- und Synth-Elementen kombiniert. Es wurde 1987 zunächst in einer rohen Version in Didsbury im Basement-Studio aufgenommen und später über Deconstruction Records veröffentlicht. „Cariño“ wurde ein Club-Hit und erschien auf mehreren Dance-Compilations (wie z.B. Dance Mania Vol.1, Street Sounds 87-1, Best of House Vol.1, BCM House Box LP12, House of Hits Westside Box).

Die zweite Veröffentlichung enthält gleich drei Songs im Latin-House-Stil. Während die erste Single „Cariño” vielleicht aufgrund fehlender Vocals in den Charts scheiterte, hat der Song „Da Me Mas” (dt=’Gib mir mehr‘) mit Gesang von Brenda Prendergast bessere Hit-Chancen – allerdings ist der Titel die B-Seite.
Für den deutschen Markt hat das Hamburger Label Chic, ein Unterlabel von Teldec, die Maxi-Single veröffentlicht.

Der Song „I Ain’t Nightclubbing“ erschien als 12“-Maxi nur als Promo um auf die North Compilation aufmerksam zu machen. (siehe unten). Auf der A-Seite der Song „Dream 17“ von Annette, geschrieben von Ricky Rouge, einem Alias von Gerald Simpson aka A Guy called Gerald.

Im Dezember 1988 erschien auf Deconstruction ein Kompilation-Album mit 8x Produktionen von T-Coy oder Pickering (von 10 Titeln). Neben den beiden Titeln der Promo Maxi ist auch der Klassiker „Voodoo Ray“ von A Guy called Gerald vorhanden und von T-Coy die erste Single „Carino“.

Auf der Innenhülle gibt es einen Bericht von Graeme Park, der gemeinsam mit Mike Pickering als DJ in Manchesters Haçienda Club auflegte. Er schildert, das im Norden England zu dem neuen Sound „House“ aus Chicago bereits im Sommer 1986 in den Clubs getanzt wurde. Northern House wächst, beeinflusst von verschiedenen Stilen, und bleibt wie Northern Soul leidenschaftlich. Der Norden hat House übernommen, und „North“ zeigt dessen Reife.
In London und dem Rest von Englands dauerte es bis zum Second Summer of Love von 1988.
North – Liner Notes von Graeme Park
It was summer 1986 and clubs in London are rocking to the sounds of east coast hip hop and Washington Go Go. Meanwhile, dancefloors ‚North of Watford‘ (especially in Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester) are crammed with people jacking to a new sound from Chicago called „house“, and for two years a north/south divide of a different kind was established.
Summer 1988 reads very differently with whole nation rapidly becoming one jacking zone. Clubs are now overflowing with people trance dancing to a form of music that they once ignored. DJ’s who once dismissed house music as hi-energy are now exclusively playing house and a whole new culture is born.
But what of the north? The jacking continues more fervently than ever, the smileys and ecstasy are evident but its not just acid that’s being played but all forms of house. And at the centre of it all is Manchester’s Haçienda. For almost three years Friday’s Nude night has been packed, and this album is a direct result of this Friday madness.
Nude night dj Mike Pickering is one of three musicians who make T-Coy who have produced some of the tracks on this album as well as contributing two (including their classic and demand debut „Carino“). The tracks on this album are honest. The people who made these records are not bandwagon jumping. Sheer enthusiasm for house and weekly visits to the clubs of the north have inspired them to make these records.
From the awesome and hypnotic ‚Voodoo Ray‘ by „A Guy Called Gerald“ to the manic glory of Frequency 9’s ‚Get On One‘, many styles of house are covered here. Witness the sheer delight of ‚Dream 17‘ by Annette and the tongue in cheek ‚Mega Trip‘ by „Masters Of Acid“. Every track is as diverse as the people who made them. These people have helped establish the northern clubs as the home of house. The northern house continues to grow and be influenced by a number of diverse styles. Like hip hop, the genre is here to stay and will develop. Trends come and go and soon fashion will be dictating a new soundtrack for some clubgoers, but in the north the house scene now resembles the northern soul scene in terms of it’s dedication and fanaticism. Almost three years ago the north adopted house and „north“ sees it coming of age. As long as house music packs the dancefloors with sweaty bodies then the story of „north“ will continue….this one run run and run….
