Charles Byron Cooper, alias Charles B., stammt aus einer musikalischen Familie und hatte schon als Teenager an eigenen Songs gearbeitet, doch für diesen Song betrat er zum ersten Mal ein Musikstudio.
Ein Freund machte ihn mit Adonis und Gentry Ice bekannt, die schnell sein Talent als Songwriter und Sänger entdeckten.
Der soulige Gesang in Verbindung mit der cleveren Acid-House-Produktion von Adonis schufen einen zeitlosen Klassiker.
Veröffentlicht wurde der Song auf dem UK Label Desire Records, auf dem zuvor bereits „Acid Poke“ von Adonis erschienen war.
Bei der Promo-Ausgabe des Samplers „In the Key of E.“ von Desire Records, auf dem „Lack of Love“ enthalten war, zeigte sich schnell, dass der Song bei den DJs sehr gut ankam. (siehe Promo Beilage unten)
So wurde „Lack of Love“ auch als 7″-Single in UK und Deutschland veröffentlicht.
„Lack of Love“ Releases
Die Original Maxi erschien 1988 bei Desire Records in UK und enthielt zwei Versionen. Diese waren auch in gekürzter Form auf der Single enthalten.
Das Cover ist in verschiedenen Farben erschienen, obwohl es sich um die gleiche Maxi handelt.
Der Designer Andy Vella erzählt im Interview mit DJ Food: „…vielleicht gefiel mir die Idee, dass sich das Cover ständig ändert, ich habe die Druckplatten immer wieder ausgetauscht.“

Es folgte eine Remix-Maxi mit zwei zusätzlichen Garage-House-Versionen von Michael Cameron & Troy Patterson von Smack Productions aus New Jersey, (bekannt auch durch ihre Arbeit mit Adeva).
Vermutlich wurden diese Mixe speziell für die Erstveröffentlichung auf dem amerikanischen Markt angefertigt.
Wenn man es nicht besser wüsste, würde man diesen Remix für das Original halten.

Charles B – Biography
The power o the vocal on ‚Lack Of Love‘ may sound like the work of an accomplished R&B singer voicing his well honed talents, whereas in fact it is the work of a new and inexperienced artist.
Charles B., full name Charles Bryon, had never made a recording in his life until he stepped into the studio with Adonis to record what my well become a dancefloor classic. The whole world of the recording artist was totally new to him. Before making ‚Lack Of Love‘ he’d never had any contact with the music industry at all.
Singing was always something he knew that he could do but had never taken seriously, although he had been writing songs since his mid-teens. However his talent was not wholly unexpected – his mother toured the world in the 60’s and 70’s as a gospel singer with the group ‚Spiritual Force‘ and still continues to sing in her native Chicago.
22 year old Charles comes from a family of three brothers and two sisters all of whom sing and play music. Charles‘ first involvement on a professional basis came when a friend introduced him to Adonis and Gentry, who quickly spotted his songwriting and vocal talents and got him into a studio. Charles met Adonis in a favourite club of his in Chicago where he is known as ‚Chaos‘ because of his explosive style of dancing.
Charles says that hopefully ‚Lack Of Love‘ will open more doors for him in the music world as he’s got a lot more to say an a lot more to sing about. Judging from the sparkling debut that ‚Lack Of Love‘ undoubtedly is. Charles B. hast no worries about how people will respond to his singing.
‚Lack Of Love‘ is released by Desire Records on January 30th.

Charles B. himself hails from Chicago and is known as The Grave Digger due to his spiritual and religious background and his ability to sing in descants. Well known on the gay scene.
CHARLES B. writes his own songs by singing them to musical accomplices like ADONIS.
Desire are probably the hottest new dance label in the UK, and have already brought you killer singles from Bam-Bam, Fingers Inc., The Shamen, Adonis and Dolbie D.
The compilation, ‚In The Key Of E‘, also includes new tracks from Count Bass-E and Miss Sticky as well as Bam-Bam, Adonis and Fingers Inc.
Initial reaction from the promo tapes of ‚In The Key Of E‘ was unanimous- ‚Lack Of Love‘ is a potential hit single!
