Voodoo Ray ’88
Die erste Single „Voodoo Ray“ war sogleich ein Hit.
Der Song erschien 1988 in UK auf dem Label Rham! und erreichte im Juli 1989 Platz 12 der UK Single-Charts. Er war damit die erfolgreichste Independent Veröffentlichung des Jahres.

Der Titel erschien sowohl auf dem Debüt Album Hot Lemonade, als auch auf dem zweiten Album Automanikk als Neueinspielung.

Eigentlich müsste der Titel „Voodoo Rage“ lauten…
Die männliche Stimme ist gesampelt von dem Comedy Duo: Peter Cook & Dudley Moore. Aus dem längeren Sketch „Bo Duddley“ wurde nur die zwei Wörter „Voodoo Rage“ und das „later“ geklaut.
Hier ein Auszug aus dem Sketch
aber aufgrund des geringen Speichers des Sampler wurde hieraus die verkürzte Version „Voodoo Ray“.
Der weibliche Gesang stammt von Nicole Collier
Der Grafiker Rob Ricketts hat die Programmierung der TR-808 dargestellt.

‘Voodoo Ray’ still stands out as one of the finest dance records ever made. It’s interesting to note that despite showing it’s age, it still sounds futuristic and other worldly – like all the best early techno and acid house, in fact. It’s proof, if any were needed, that the best dance music is often the simplest. It is, without a shadow of doubt, the best dance record ever released.

Gerald Simpson (* 16.02.1967 in Manchester)
Als ‚Antwort‘ auf den Detroit Techno Sound von Derrick May, Juan Atkins und Co. hat Gerald 1987 zusammen mit Graham Massey und Martin Price in Manchester die Gruppe 808 State gegründet.
Mit dem Song „Pacific State“ haben sie einen Klassiker geschaffen, der in den UK-Single Charts auf Platz 10 landete.
1989 verliess Gerald die Gruppe um fortan nur Solo als „A Guy called Gerald“ zu arbeiten.
1991 starte Gerald sein Label Juice Box.
(Das zweite Album Automanikk wurde zuvor auf dem Major Label CBS / Sony 1990 veröffentlicht).
Auf Juice Box veröffentlichte Gerald unter verschiedenen Namen zahlreiche Maxis. Stylistisch entwickelte er sich in Richtung Drum & Bass / Jungle.
Seit 2005 lebt Gerald Simpson in Berlin.
